Birth plus - Awakening the Senses

The first few days of a baby's life usually consist of long periods of sleep interrupted by short periods when the baby is awake. The duration of wakefulness gradually lengthens and includes periods of crying and calmness.

A newborn's vision, hearing, touch, smell and taste develop rapidly during these first months. Good toys stimulate babies senses with interesting patterns, colours and sounds. Within a few days of birth, babies establish an interaction with their parents through eye contact and facial gestures - important steps of bonding and building a strong parent-baby attachment.

At play:

  • Bright objects interest babies
  • Gazes at toy moved towards and away from face
  • Faces are fascinating especially a parent's
  • Grasps finger of parent
  • When babies hear a sound, they turn their head
