Make sure that you protect your baby during the sunny summer. As they say in Australia Slip, Slop, Slap.
Slip on a shirt or vest
Slop on some protection
Slap on a hat
Always look for a shady spot where your child will be out of the sun.
Talk about the things you see, give your child new experiences and let them see that you are enjoying yourself.
Don't go too far on your first trips as your child could easily become tired.
If you are off to the beach make sure you pack suitable toys that won't be affected by the sand and don't forget your bucket and spade!
Take a favourite toy with you to the beach or countryside. Young children love talking to their toys and this will help stimulate them. Bring the teddy or toy into your conversations with your baby.
Games
Why not go exploring with your baby. Remember to keep your Yes Superbaby scarf or band ready to stimulateyour child on the journey. Once in the country or seaside show your child some of the different things such as the rock pools or animals in the fields. Remember to be safe at all times.
See what kind of creatures you can spot. If you see a cow or a sheep make the sound with your child. When you get home find some pictures of the creatures you have seen, talk about them and make the sound together
Find a flat surface and lay out a blanket or rug. Take hold of your child just under their arms and lift them up so that they are standing. Make sure your child's feet are flat when they touch the ground. Lower them gently so that their legs bend. Then pick them up and lift them high into the air. Smile and encourage them as you do this.
With older children you could go on a stone hunt. Take a container with you. Find small and large stones, bumpy and smooth ones. Take the stones home, clean them and get your child to sort them out. This is a great beach activity!
MAKE SURE THAT YOU ONLY COLLECT LARGER STONES AND ONES THAT WOULD NOT BE A HAZARD TO YOUR CHILD. BE SAFE!
Further Activities.
Cut out some pictures of different flowers. Stick them on a sheet of paper in a bunch. You could also make your own summer scene by cutting out different ‘ summery’ things from a selection of old magazines.
Take a light ball with you when you go out. Find a flat space and spread out a rug or blanket. Lie your baby on the rug. Tie the ball to a piece of string. Hold it by their feet and let them kick against it. Soon your child will realise that they can make the ball move by kicking it. Older children may like to kick the ball along the ground and then go and collect it.
Collect some shells from the beach. When you get home stick them together and put some eyes on them.
Take a large beach ball with you. Place your baby on the top of the ball making sure their feet touch the ground. Hold them gently and let them safely rock backwards and forwards on the ball. This can be extended so that your baby can stretch, wriggle and uncurl their toes.
Children love bubbles and so why not take a pot of bubble mixture on your trip.
